Competitive Counter-Strike has always been built on trust, skill, and fairness. However, over the years, several professional players have been banned for cheating or misconduct. These incidents shocked the community and changed how competitive integrity is viewed in esports.
Hovik ‘KQLY’ Tovmassian
Hovik Tovmassian, better known as KQLY, was a French Counter-Strike: Global Offensive player who competed for Titan. In November 2014, before DreamHack Winter 2014, he was banned by Valve for cheating, a VAC ban. Titan immediately removed him from roster, incident caused major scandal in scene. The ban shook trust in professional players and remains one of most significant cheating controversies in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive history.
Almost as famous as KQLY’s VAC ban is reaction of Adil Benrlitom, in which he repeatedly asks: “KQLY VAC BAN?” You can see it here:
Nikhil ‘forsaken’ Kumawat
Nikhil ‘forsaken’ Kumawat was an Indian Counter-Strike player for OpTic India. In October 2018, during the eXTREMESLAND 2018, he was caught cheating live on stage using external software (the infamous “word.exe” incident). Tournament officials discovered the cheat during a match, leading to an immediate disqualification of the team and a permanent ban from esports events. The scandal became one of the most infamous moments in the history of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, as it was one of the rare cases where cheating was exposed live during a professional tournament.
Team iBuyPower
The iBUYPOWER scandal was a major match-fixing case in professional Counter-Strike. In 2015, players from iBUYPOWER intentionally lost a match for in-game item gambling profits. Because of this, Valve and tournament organizers investigated the incident thoroughly and publicly. As a result, the involved players received permanent bans from official Valve-sponsored events. This included players like DaZeD, steel, swag, and AZK, who were heavily punished. The scandal significantly damaged the credibility of the competitive Counter-Strike scene at the time.
Emil ’emilio’ Christensen
Emilio was a Swedish professional Counter-Strike player. He played for Ninjas in Pyjamas during the early CS:GO era. In 2014, he was VAC-banned live during an official online match. The ban was issued by Valve, and it immediately ended his match. Because it happened during play, the incident became widely discussed in the community. Afterwards, he was removed from top-level competition and his career was heavily impacted.
